The Natural Reserve was established in 2014, with the firm intention of recovering and protecting a highly fragile and deteriorated ecosystem that had been affected by deforestation, burning of the páramo, and unsustainable expansion of agricultural frontier.
The Perijá Mountain Range, a protected area of páramo and subpáramo, is characterized by hosting endemic species of these northern foothills of the eastern mountain range, making it one of the most important ecological enclaves in the Andes-Caribbean transition.
The Natural Reserve is located between the hamlets of El Cinco and Altos de Perijá, in the municipality of Manaure Balcón del Cesar, department of Cesar, approximately 58 kilometers from the city of Valledupar.
Public transportation: From the city of Valledupar, head towards the municipality of La Paz, approximately 20 minutes, then continue towards Manaure Balcón del Cesar, approximately 20 minutes.
