The El Dorado ProAves Reserve is the highest accessible partof the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, being located 30 km by road from Santa Marta and 17 km by road from the town of Minca, department of Magdalena, Colombia.
El Dorado ProAves Reserve is the legendary birding mecca of the Americas, with more endemic and unique bird species only found in this nature reserve than another site on earth. Established in 2006 with the objective of saving the Santa Marta parakeet, the reserve protects a wide range of elevations and ecosystems that include triopical forests to temperate cloud forests. A place to truely connect with the magic of nature.
To get to the ProAves El Dorado Reserve, there are various options. Please note that 25 of the 30 km from Santa Marta are paved and in excellent condition, but the final 5 km to the lodge are rough and ideally require a motorbike or high clearance vehicle. Options for access include:
(1) taxi to Minca then rent a motorbike with driver,
(2) a taxi to “La Y” and walk final 5 km,
(3) rent a 4×4 or high clearance vehicle to drive up to the reserve.
