The ProAves Las Tángaras Reserve is located in the Municipality of Carmen de Atrato, department of Chocó, 140 kilometers from Medellín.
Las Tanagers ProAves Reserve was created to protect the habitat of two species of endemic birds: the Gold-ringed Tanager and the Black-and-gold tanager. The Reserve is one of the most diverse and important tropical forest sites on Earth, with an altitude of 1,250 to 3,400 meters above sea level. The reserve protects the upper watershed of the the Atrato River (the most important river in the Chocó), which serves as a vital economic resource for tens of thousands of native and colony inhabitants. The acquisition of this land helps to consolidate a security zone for the protection of biodiversity, against rapid and unsustainable colonization.
The highway from Medellín to the reserve is entirely paved and accessible by car and bus (approx. 4 hours). The closet town is Carmen de Atrato which is less than 10 minutes away. The reserve is just 2.5 hours from the city of Quibdó.
From the Reserve cabin to the trails is 8 kms, so visitors can reserve transportation in advance or have one of your own. It is not necessary that it be a 4×4 vehicle. The cost is around US $50.
