This conservation area of the ProAves Foundation was created in 2005 with the aim of protecting the habitat of the Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena orina) and preserving a fragment of one of the best-preserved páramo ecosystems in Colombia.
During an expedition conducted by the ProAves Foundation in 2004 to the Páramo del Sol, the Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena orina), a species classified as Endangered (EN), was recorded for the first time in over 50 years. Thanks to this rediscovery, the Natural Reserve was established, serving as a conservation refuge for a wide variety of endemic species.
The Natural Reserve is located on the axis of the Western Cordillera in the El Chuscal hamlet, belonging to the municipality of Urrao, Antioquia.
The Natural Reserve is situated in the El Chuzcal hamlet, on the highest western foothills of the Pacific slope in the Western Cordillera in the department of Antioquia.
